    The Eleksen UMPC Soft Keyboard

    umpcsoftkeyboard.jpg

One of my biggest questions about the UMPC platform was how would spreadsheets and frequent data entry  be handled?

Eleksen announces three new UMPC Bluetooth and USB Soft Keyboards. The version pictured is a carrying case with an intergreated keyboard!

Intergrating keyboards into carrying cases will be a great add on to this new platform. Hopefully some intergrated keyboard hard cases will be next!

Movielink announces deal for UMPC exposure

ars technica reports that Movielink is jumping on the UMPC bandwagon!

With the hotly anticipated announcement yesterday that Microsoft is launching a new portable platform called Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) positioned between tablets and PDAs, other companies can be expected to jump on that horse and ride it as far as they can. One of those companies is Movielink, the video-on-demand service that appears to have the largest lead in a very slow sack race. Movielink is trying to place itself in the position of becoming to the UMPC platform and the movie industry what iTMS has been to the iPod and the music industry. Yesterday, the company, which already caters only to users of Windows 2000 and XP, announced a partnership with Microsoft in which Movielink will be “the premier brand and provider of video content for the UMPC.”

Origami comes in many flavors, all called UMPC devices

Verdict : All the "Is this the Origami?" image leaks were true.

Origami, the code name for this new platform called UMPC, come in many flavors. Is Dell working on one? I doubt it, they don’t even have a TabletPC (to my dissapointment).

Q&A: Microsoft Unveils Details for Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers

    03-09umpc_01.jpg

Introduced at CeBIT, the new mobile PC form factor, formerly codenamed “Origami,” provides full Windows functionality with an enhanced touch screen, pen and keyboard input.

HANNOVER, Germany, March 9, 2006 – Microsoft today unveiled details for Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs), a new category of mobile computing devices that features small, lightweight, carry-everywhere hardware designs coupled with the full functionality of a Microsoft Windows-based PC and a choice of input options, including enhanced touch-screen capabilities. The debut of UMPCs here at CeBIT, the world’s largest trade fair showcasing digital IT and telecommunications solutions, follows Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates’ call in 2005 for the computer industry to develop a new category of PCs that are less expensive, lighter and more functional. PressPass asked Bill Mitchell, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Platforms Division, to discuss UMPCs and explain how these new devices are different from other mobile computers.

    PressPass: What are Ultra-Mobile PCs?

Mitchell: UMPCs are a new category of mobile PCs designed to support our increasing mobile lifestyles. They support mobile-tuned user interface features such as touch, pen and dedicated buttons as well as keyboards for convenient access to Windows-based applications on-the-go. The extremely mobile nature of these devices, together with the richness of Windows PC technology, combine to create a powerful platform for mobile communications, entertainment, gaming and new scenarios such as location-based services as well. The "Origami" project is really our first step toward achieving a big vision. We believe that UMPCs will eventually become as indispensable and ubiquitous as mobile phones are today. We are working toward that goal with a sequence of advances in hardware and software. Our next step along the roadmap will take place in the Windows Vista release timeframe. But today’s UMPCs are a great choice for all those situations when you’re on the go, but need to keep informed, entertained and connected via the full functionality of a Windows PC

    CIMG7054.jpg

I have never been a big fan of TabletPC, but the Nokia 770 and the Pepper Pad form factors have me looking at these devices as a replacement of the "Pen Based PDA", as HP put it.

Again, I am going to mention our Ultra Portable Forum. Get in and talk it up even if you think all the hype is unwarranted. If you only want to read about Ultra Mobile PCs, check out Mobilitysite’s UMPC Blog at UMPCsite.com
