There is a new video about TabletKiosk V-700 (and now officially eo V7110) Lora’s 12 year old niece is using it. And look at the lucky girl! She is both beautiful and has cool relatives.
And she founds it cute. Hand it to a 12 year old little geeky boy, what will he say? I’m serious about this, UMPC’s are partly designed for (younger or older) students, what do they think? Would they push their parents to buy one?
(and i changed the entry because they contacted us very quickly, they won us!)

In Paul Watson’s comment on CodeProject.com, the dangers of using prototypes for publicity reveal. As many other sites and people mention, you should use your nails instead of your fingers. That is not an issue to easily go away. The balance between response time, accuracy for handwriting, ability to use your fingers and many other things is very thin. I’m very curious how they will balance it over on screen keyboard and handwriting. (Is Touch Pack changing the settings continuously? )

I have thought about a possible name to UMPC type computers for a long time. I couldn’t really find a good name but in this serious thinking, but i got sure of one thing: a class name is definitely essential. Considering it is a PC, i found lots of stuff : uPC, sPC (small PC), nanoPC … better stuff , even worse things… Yes, UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) is not an Ultimate trendy name, but it is a good name for this class. And Origami is a very very good name and it is not good a good class name, but very good project name as it is. In Loren’s research on Tuxreports, Origami name is found as a better ad keyword than UMPC. Of course it should be because UMPC term has not existed for a long time but for 1 month (which is a month that is not very far from us!!!) As time passes, UMPC term will be much more used.
But both Origami and UMPC is found “barbaric” and “sucking”. Find better names and please inform me what you find.
AND, i found Bill Bennett’s article , lets just say not very well thought. He says “If the Origami had Newton-like software, it could be a world beater.” ….

Samsung shows 32 GB Flash based 1.8″ Drives especially for rugged notebooks. They are fast (due to lower response time), much more durable (no moving parts) and they need much less power than hard drives. (about only 5 percent of they consume). They are “just the right thing” for UMPCs for these reasons, but they cost about 900$ now.

At Guardian, a new article popped out about UMPCs and more especially about pen computing. Jack Schofield asks pen computing will be “popular” with UMPCs. It is clear that most consumers are happier with keyboards other than digitizers, but this should change one way or other. We used buttons because we didn’t have better communicators but we have now. If you put buttons, you remove place for bigger screens and no one is happy with small screens. Now we have better handwriting recognitions and on screen keyboards, why would you be stuck with buttons? And more importantly, UMPC is future’s computing, that’s for sure. And i don’t see buttons in the future, do you?
(even elevators get touch sensitivity)

AMD may provide processors (and especially 64 Bit) to UMPC.
Toshiba may be unveiling another UMPC (i would wait and see what others will do)
A new(?) UMPC from Amtek (same as Tablet Kiosk V-700 and Smart Caddie)
Dell not fond of UMPCs. (And UMPCs are not fond of them :D)
New UMPC-like products from Bebos in new forms (not to be successsful, but to be different)
UMPC success on Mix 06 (and a few photos from there)
ECS will sell UMPCs under Founder name.
Apple might be pulling 60 Gigs iPod (distant relation to UMPCs)
UMPCs are capable of running Linux (did anyone think the opposite?) (and apperantly Samsung thinking of being a traitor)
Apple’s constant patent applying may lead to a new UMPC (UMMAC :D)

There are a lot of comments are floating over the net. I made a little collection for you and commented on those.
1)Will UMPC Fly or Flop?
If ipods can fly, everything can. Apple didn’t invent mp3 players or mp3s. And there was napster everywhere back then. Did they become a hit? And they are believed to be working on a “UMPC killer” full touchscreen video iPod. I wish they will release a product like that. It would attract more people to UMPC’s and PDA’s rather than that product. Walkmen and portable DVD players are different things.

In Samsung UK Site’s Q1 specifications, there was a Power Bank option which would give a battery life of 10 hours. Now it is removed. (still on Features) And instead, they have included “over 1.40 hours of DVD Playback”. You can’t watch all of the film, just half!

I was curious about battery life on UMPC’s with Via Processors. C7-M 1.0 Ghz ULV is about Max 3.5 Watts TDP and Pentium M 1.0 Ghz is about 8 Watts. Intel UMPCs’ battery life was announced about 2.5 hours. And now, in TabletPC2.com ’s preview, we see V-700’s (with C7-M 1.0 Ghz) battery life is about 2.5 hours too. Last hope on all-day UMPC’s is gone. Of course if you don’t mind carrying a “power bank” of Samsung Q1.
